It had been a physically and emotionally demanding day that had both Safiyat and Shehu acting out different scripts. They both had to save each other the shame associated with the unique situation they found themselves. Her non-virgin state that would ordinarily have caused serious furore had been tampered by his erectile dysfunction. Both were level as they maneuvered through the potentially controversial issue without any event. That would not last them however; they knew they had to find a way.

The issue of her virginity had been addressed with the display of the customary white handkerchief but the result of that exercise had to follow. How that would happen was not clear to them both. They knew it had to but they were just not sure of how to get it done. Each of the two was in thoughts as they lay side by side but one had to broach the subject. It was Shehu’s responsibility to do that but he was mapping out strategies in his head till sleep came. He turned and opened his eyes to find Safiyat looking straight into his’. Taking that as a cue, he sat up.

“Hello Safiya”, he started with something between a smile and a straight face. That did not change her expression, she was neither smiling nor frowning but the look on her face gave a lot away.

“We will get out of this my wife. I have reached out to a friend who knows a specialist that will get on my case as soon as possible. There was no way I would start treatment before wedding ne. He told me I will be good enough to satisfy you and make babies within a week of treatment, he mentioned five days actually but I don’t believe that”.

Shehu knew he was lying but he needed to put her mind at rest. She was fidgety when they eventually went into the Emir’s Chamber for the mandatory prayer and he noticed. He wondered how no one else would notice if he did. Once Safiyat calmed down and trusted him to let things get done according to him, he knew how to hatch plans.

She looked into his eyes as if to ask if he was sure of what he was saying. He rubbed her shoulders lightly and she sat up.

“I did not bargain for all of this. I know I did not come to you intact but I appreciate the fact that you did not shame me when you discovered. I know that would not be the case if you do not have a medical challenge with impregnating me. You could also have still shamed me to the whole world that way but you did not”. Safiyat found her voice and spoke from the deepest part of her heart.

“That you have not stripped me naked in public and let me be ridiculed means I owe you the needed support as you start the treatment to get your manhood functional again. It is to my benefit too for no one will believe that it is your fault if I do not get pregnant. I shall stand by you and Insha Allah*, the treatment will work for you my Lord”.

He loved how she said every word that came out of her mouth – the delivery, the language, the exact words she used. He loved as he saw her doubts dissolve as she spoke like someone who was giving a formal speech. Shehu however wished the assurance was real. He wished the saga was at its end, that he would live with her in all honesty and without having issue of infertility to confront. That was a pipe dream however and he had to face it.

He held her close and she put her head on his shoulder as they both savoured the moment, the kind that has been rare since they got away from every prying eye, the kind they should have had, the kind they desired to be their lot as they confronted all challenges together. It was in that sitting position that sleep came for her. She readjusted, putting her head on his laps and surrendered to the journey to dreamland. He kept looking at her beautiful facial features, admiring her innocence as he also drifted.

The Emir was pacing in his room, unable to stomach the news, one he wished will be nothing but a rumour. Experience however taught him that more often than not, whatever Audu hears on the Palace grounds has a bigger chance of being true than nothing else. He could count the information that turned out to be false on the fingers of his hand.

In as much as he wanted to not believe, steeling himself against that feeling. The trust in Audu was too much to dismiss such a very sensitive disclosure with a wave of his hand. He knew he had to act, with all responsibility and utmost care too. He treaded carefully where Shehu was concerned.

What made it worse was that the guards and servants would be spreading that news among themselves within a very short period of time. He had to make sure that did not happen. Sleep had deserted the monarch and he set to work immediately.

He walked out of the inner chamber and was met by the guards at the entrance. Sending for Audu, he took a seat in his private sitting room while he waited for Audu to arrive. After what looked like the turn of a year, the ever reliable Audu came into sight and dispersed the other guards. They discussed the implication of the two guards’ discovery and the Emir told Audu to give the guards a stern warning that there should be no rumours about the Crown Prince infertility. Giving the needed instruction to Audu set his racing pulse aright and he retired for the night

The duo was shocked when confronted with the discovery. The denied vehemently to knowing anything of such. Audu however told them the implication of any rumours flying about Shehu. Fear washed down the spine of the two for they had heard news of Audu’s mercilessness when it came to carrying out certain orders. They knew they would simply disappear from the Palace grounds. More cause for concern was the fact that the one who was confided in had also told another, and there was the likelihood that the one who was told would have done the same.

They agreed on a way to water down the effect of the fast spreading information by assembling all the guards at dawn. That meant all had to wake before the normal working hours. Audu told them to do it anyhow they could, reminding them what penalty the spread of the news carried.

**********************************************
The last thing she remembered as she was cooed into fitful sleep filled with flying phantoms was Shehu’s reassuring touch on her shoulder. The sleep had been her most peaceful in a fortnight. They were however awoken by the Emir’s summon with the break of dawn.

He took a look at Safiyat who did not even move despite the disturbance. She looked peaceful in her sleep, just stirring a little as he got out of bed to make dress himself and make his way to his father’s chambers. He was not expected to be disturbed by anyone. It was customary that he be left till he wakes and comes out to greet the Emir alone first, while later going in to come back with his wife and sit in the Throne Room to be greeted by visitors and all other well-wishers.

The early summon was therefore a little surprising to him but he was not bothered by anything. He had closeness with his father that went beyond customs and tradition so he had no cause to suspect anything was wrong as he walked into the Emir’s study. As he entered, Audu stooped in obeisance and took his leave from the study, making sure to close the door and standing with his back to the door to prevent any passage. This was not strange to him but Audu looked ill at ease with his arrival. Shehu waved it aside and stooped to greet his father.

“Ina kwana Baba”**, Shehu said in greeting. The Emir looked at him, barely nodded to acknowledging his presence as he continued picking the pieces of his tesbir*** one by one, muttering Arabic words.

Shehu stood up and took a seat waiting for his father to be done. His mind darted to the sleeping beauty that adorned his bed and had become a permanent feature in his life “till death do us part” when from nowhere he heard his father speak.

“Let me be frank with you Shehu. Since you deem it fit for me to be kept in the dark about your health condition, I will pretend as if I know nothing but you must give me a heir without fail within the next one year”.

Shehu felt cold and hot at the same time. He stood immediately and tried to compose himself but his stomach was in a knot and his mouth seemed as if it had been blessed with a handful of sand. He was simply tongue-tied.

“Don’t try to be funny my son, you know the implications of bringing a bastard into the Palace. Please leave”, The Emir concluded with a wave of hand.

Shehu was a total mess and he walked out of the study in a haze-like daze, unable to speak a single word.

Insha Allah (Hausa) – By God’s grace
Ina kwana Baba (Hausa) – Good morning father
Tesbir – Rosary

The first test was passed. Shehu was all smiles as he moved from one person to the other, shaking their hands as they took turns to congratulate him on the successful breaking of the hymen. Some of these men were the Emir’s advisers and respected men in the town. After hailing the older men as the town’s tradition demanded, he went on to meet his age mates who were also waiting to felicitate with him.

“Here comes the groom; the one who has successfully opened the door of fruitfulness”. One of Shehu’s friends said as he walked into a more open part of the palace grounds. Others were hailing jocularly amidst back slapping while he moved from one to the other, thanking them for their presence at the wedding celebration.

Shehu’s worries were in the distant past and he felt light headed as he celebrated his ‘manliness’ and Safiyat’s ‘purity’ with those who mattered. His mind strayed to his wife at intervals but he could not leave the young men with whom he was celebrating his new status as a full man. He was expected to stay with them till the last one left as the town’s culture abhorred married men mingling with single men. Although that aspect of their tradition was becoming obsolete, being the crown Prince meant he had to be very sensitive to the minor details.

No matter how long it took, he still had to formally present the new woman to the Emir for his personal blessings for the two of them. As Shehu was to spend time with the men, Safiyat was to be formally welcomed into the midst of the palace women, with more respect for her as the wife of the crown Prince and the future Queen of the Emirate.

She was enjoying the jibes and bantering but was not very comfortable as her conscience pricked her. She waited to no end for her husband to come and appreciate the women and then take her to the Emir from there but it seemed that was not on the cards.

After what seemed like eternity, she saw his personal servant approach and was happy. She knew her freedom from the stories of lost virginities and broken hymens had come but she dreaded meeting the Emir.

“What if he detects? What if he knows? What would be my fate? I know these old men are good at reading expressions. Shame will become my second name huh?”.

Safiyat was engrossed in different thoughts as Shehu approached. The women all stood as he got into their midst and chorused “Ina wuni maigida. Long may you live Prince”.

Sannun ku. I appreciate you all for your role in our wedding and for welcoming my beautiful wife into the midst of you beautiful women. Nagode sosai”, he said in appreciation. Taking his wife by the hand, he led her to the place she dreaded most on the Palace grounds, the Emir’s Quarters.

As the duo advanced, each was lost in different thoughts. Shehu’s fears and worries that had vanished came back in full force while Safiyat’s thoughts were straying to and fro. Conscience was dealing with them both but they had to meet the Emir for the needful to be done.It was tradition, and had to be done.
*************************************************

“Who do I disclose all these too? They are too weighty and are of dire consequences if it gets to the hearing of the wrong person. I can’t also keep it to myself. Hmmmm! I must speak it to someone”

That was one of the Palace guards who was privy to the discussions between Shehu and Safiyat the previous evening. Shehu’s personal guard and servant who were meant to be at the door were on other assignments. The servant was not actually needed but the guard had no reason to be away from his duty post.

Nature however called and he had to go obey the call. It was needed for him to put someone at the door post to relieve him while he went away quickly. He had overfed on the various delicacies that were served at the wedding gala and was having a running battle with diarrhea. Assuming there was no need for emergency, he stationed one of the junior guards while he stole away to do what was needed.

It was a privilege for guard to be at the door and his perverse mind was at alert. He tried peeping to no avail but put his ears on the ground for the moans and grunts that he expected to come from the couple. He however heard words and a bit of argument. That made him strain his ears a bit more and the important bits and pieces of the discussions got to his hearing. He was shell shocked at the revelation.

“So the Prince cannot perform despite his good looks ehn? And to think different beautiful girls in the Emirate are dying for his attention”.

Shehu’s sterility was of more importance to him than every other thing he heard. He could not piece whatever it was that he heard about virginity together. The impotence was of more importance to him.

“Chai! Safiyat is so unlucky. A beautiful girl like that having no choice but to live with something like that for the rest of her life ehn! So we will not actually see what their children will look like. What a wicked world. Royalty can’t even bail them out”.

He stood there in his thoughts till Shehu’s guard returned and he was dismissed.

As night fell and all guards who were not on the late shift retired, the Emir’s chief guard, his most trusted, saw two of the guards seated and discussing. A thorough bred, his father was one of the Emir’s most trusted before death came calling. One of his duties was to know every detail of happenings on the Palace grounds and he had his ‘ears’ planted among all the categories of people on the grounds from cleaner to cook, from the least ranking person to the blue bloods. So was his influence and the trust reposed in him.

The next morning, details of the two guards’ nocturnal discussion came to his notice and he knew he had to alert the Emir immediately.

“Long may you live Your Imperial Majesty. I have information of most classified nature to feed you with my lord”, he said as he stooped to show his total submission.

“Please speak Audu. I have a meeting with the new couple and some elders on the hour. I shall meet them to discuss matrimonial bliss after yesterday’s blessings. After that, the issue of the new school is to be discussed with the elders”, the Emir replied.

He was obviously in high spirits as a result of Shehu’s wedding and the general good way things were working in the Konduga Emirate and his personal life in the past few years. Audu saw the happiness on the Emir’s face and thought of how to break the news without the whole matter get him in trouble.

“My Lord, I’m afraid it is no pleasant news. I request that I be left alone with you as I discuss this”.

The Emir’s nose twitched, a reaction that had come to be associated with him when there is a swift change in his mood. Waving his hand, the lower ranking guards moved out of the private chamber of the Emir.

“Your Highness. I overheard two guards discussing something about the Prince last night”, Audu said without looking up.

The Emir readjusted his sitting posture and looked at his guard. Trying to be calm but obviously anxious, angry and a bit confused, he found his voice.

“Make sure no one is close by and speak this very minute”.

Audu looked at the outer part of the Emir’s part, instructed the guards to prevent anyone from coming in and broke the news of Audu’s suspected infertility to the Emir.

“That is what I heard my Lord. It requires your urgent action as you know what the young ones nowadays can do. You also know my Lord, that bringing a bastard into the Palace might be very disastrous. I am sorry to soil your good spirits Your Highness”.

Nagode Audu. I shall swing into action to determine the truthfulness or otherwise of this claim. If found to be false and baseless, the two guards who were discussing shall die by the sword. I do not joke with matters concerning the Crown Prince”, the Emir said and walked out.

The game was up. How Shehu knew Safiyat’s indiscretions with her Maalim was something she needed to crack so as to save herself from humiliation. In order of priority however, that was not the next thing to do. People were waiting outside for Shehu to emerge with the blood stained white handkerchief. She knew she had to cooperate with whatever Shehu’s plans were. She knelt in front of her husband and asked what he wanted them to do.

“People are already waiting for us to come outside with the traditional stained hankie Safiya. You know what failure to make that happen means right?”

“I do my Lord”. Safiya was morose all of a sudden. Shehu sat beside her and drew her close.

“Calm down Safiya. We will draw blood to use for the handkerchief”.

“Draw blood? How? From where?”

“Watch me”.

In a fluid motion, Shehu got up and headed for the table. He took a scalpel and headed back to Safiyat on the bed. While she still sat wondering what he was up to, he used the sharp object to make a cut on his left arm in a swift move. Thick red fluid oozed out in a trickle and he wiped the blood clean with the handkerchief. Safiyat was shocked by this action. She covered her mouth with her hands to hold back the exclamatory sound that almost escaped.

“We have to draw blood from you too”, he said coldly, looking right into her face.

Safiyat met her husband’s handsome face and saw a steely look drawn on his good looking features.

“We’ll make the cut on your thigh”.

She looked at him in total disbelief. “What did you say? My thigh? Is this meant to be a sort of punishment? Yours was on the arm so why should mine be on the thigh?”

Safiyat was venting. There was no explanation for her to be cut on the thigh as far as she was concerned. She knew they had to find a way out but it was not the crude way Shehu was going about it. She was very pissed but could not afford to raise her voice because of those waiting for the blood stained handkerchief outside Shehu’s chambers.

He knew he had to make her see reason for his decision to allow her get cut on the thigh. Allowing her to express her frustration, he sat and allowed her throw her tantrums and show her displeasure.

“We will make the cut on your thigh so as to make your walking difficult”, he said keeping a straight face. “At least there was a way you walked after you lost your virginity”, he then added smiling as he moved closer to her.

“What have I gotten myself into?”

Shehu started raising her gown to make the cut but she pushed his hand away and got up in a flash.

Maigida, I can feign the torn hymen as I walk. I do not have to be cut on the thigh to make that point. There is the emotional torture that comes with the various discoveries already. Please don’t put me through the physical pain again”.

Shehu looked at her amused and convinced at the same time. He liked the plan that she hatched and smiled.

“I am lucky Safiyat. I have an intelligent woman as my wife”.

She smiled, snatched the scalpel and made the cut on her arm. Faking another loud moan cum scream, she wiped the blood with the handkerchief and heard the excited people outside the bedchamber giggle in excitement.

After a few minutes, Shehu opened the door of the chamber and displayed the blood stained handkerchief proudly to loud cheers by all who were waiting for the ‘good news’.
